Pitlochry’s Hidden Gem: Black Spout Waterfall

, ,

Last weekend I decided to take a trip to Black Spout Wood; an area I have wanted to visit for several years. This is a beautiful spot, particularly at this time of year. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of autumn colours still on show. Leaves were falling all around me with every gust of wind so I think I visited just in time.

Black Spout Waterfall is an impressive 60m tall and can be viewed from a purpose-built timber viewpoint. This is a short walk but a lovely place to spend an hour (or more!) taking in the surrounding woods. I spent a quiet morning amongst the trees before heading to Pitlochry for a wander. I parked at the dedicated Black Spout car park for this walk. However, there is a route which starts at the centre of Pitlochry and passes Edradour Distillery. The walkhighlands route for this can be found here.

From the car park, it is not long at all before you reach the Black Spout viewpoint. This is a beautiful spot to take in the panoramic views of the waterfall and surrounding forest. The walk is fairly accessible and clearly signposted throughout.

After reaching the viewpoint, you can continue on upwards and towards the foot of the falls.

Continue on to reach higher ground and gain views out toward Ben Vrackie.

Before heading back to the car park, there is a perfect spot to look upwards towards a canopy of trees.

Bird life in the area includes: Woodpeckers, Tits, Treecreepers, Warblers, Jays, Jackdaws, Buzzards, Kestrels, Heron and Grey Wagtails. If you are lucky, you may catch sight of a red squirrel.

As I headed back down towards the car park, the morning sun was breaking through the trees.

All in, this is a beautiful walk and an incredibly tranquil spot. I would recommend getting there early to catch the morning light.

If you are planning to start or end your walk in Pitlochry, there are plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes. There are two large car parks (charge) in the town centre and public toilets available also.
